Compagnie Bancaire merges with Paribas
In December 1997 Banque Paribas launched a takeover bid for Compagnie Bancaire. The Annual General Shareholders' Meeting on May 12, 1998 approved the merger of Compagnie Financière de Paribas, Banque Paribas and Compagnie Bancaire to create the group now simply called Paribas (which would become BNP Paribas after the merger in 2000).
Today, the different companies that were once units of Compagnie Bancaire - Cetelem, Cardif, Cortal, Arval, Klépierre and UCB - have merged with former BNP units in their respective businesses and made themselves leaders in European specialized financial services.
