The 1980s

After a new government came to power in 1981, Paribas was nationalized on February 12, 1982. Because the Company Bancaire's total deposits were under one billion francs, it escaped nationalization. Between 1982 and 1990, under André Lévy-Lang, Compagnie Bancaire pursued a process that Jacques de Fouchier referred to as "Europe's learning period".

In 1985, Cetelem took the first step toward the creation of a European consumer credit provider when it launched its Findomestic unit in Italy. Taking over from "Revenus Pierre", Cortal (now a bank) realised a longstanding idea that Jacques de Fouchier had for a "branchless bank" that would use the media to build customer relationships. In 1989, Arval Service Lease developed the concept of long-term leasing and management of company cars.
