From national bank to regional headquarters
The Comptoir d'Escompte de Mulhouse came once again under French jurisdiction after the First World War. In seeking to become a solid regional bank, it opened new branches. But previous agreements with the Banque Nationale de Crédit significantly limited its growth possibilities, as the two establishments became competitors and their relations became strained. The Comptoir sold its shares in BNC and pursued growth in eastern France to eventually develop a network of 59 branches.
It soon reached the limits of regional development, and with the banking industry beginning to consolidate, the Comptoir d'Escompte de Mulhouse and the Banque Nationale de Crédit no longer had any reason to remain apart. It was only natural that the BNC, whose business territory included all of France, absorb its parent company in May 1930 and thereby make the CEM its regional headquarters for eastern France.
